COVID – YOU HAVE DONE IT AGAIN!

“…When I awake, I will be satisfied with your presence.” Psalm 17:15 (CSB)

I write this sitting at home on my bed. Only, I’m not supposed to be at home. I am supposed to be at work, in meetings, planning, and dreaming into the future. Instead, we find ourselves beginning “Lockdown 2.0” as a “second wave” of Covid-19 looms over New Zealand.

A few days ago, my calendar was full of appointments, sports practices, gym classes, coffee dates, planning meetings, family dinners, and more. Now there are crosses through every page, and a blank week is on the horizon.

I woke early on our first morning of Lockdown 2.0, having had little sleep with feelings of disappointment, annoyance, and frustration. And if I were to dig a little deeper, I would discover that I was also feeling a sense of discontentment. “A dissatisfaction with one’s circumstances” – Miriam Webster Dictionary. I know where I want to be, where I planned to be, where I thought I’d be – and it’s definitely not here.

Ever felt like that? Stuck in circumstances you didn’t sign up for? Circumstances preventing you from getting to where you hoped and dreamed of being? It almost feels like you are stuck behind an almighty traffic jam with no way forward or back – just stagnated – when all you want to do is keep on moving.

As discontentment hovered, I felt the Lord remind me of a verse in Psalm 17:15 (CSB)

“…When I awake, I will be satisfied with your presence.”

He always knows just what we need, doesn’t He? This, a timely reminder to myself about where I am seeking my contentment and satisfaction.

Could it be that the only place contentment or satisfaction will find completion and wholeness is in His presence?

This world we live in is full of confusion and disappointment. It is full of messed up people making messed choices. If we look to the world, to circumstances, or to others for our peace and assurance, we will always be left dissatisfied.

For our satisfaction is simply found in His presence.

Because in His presence, we find peace.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV)

In His presence, we find protection.

Keep me [in Your affectionate care, protect me] as the apple of Your eye; Hide me in the [protective] shadow of Your wings. Psalm 17:8 (AMP)

In His presence, we find deliverance.

I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock where I seek refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Psalm 18:1-2 (CSB)

He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he pulled me out of deep water. Psalm 18:16 (CSB)

In His presence, we find confidence.

Lord, you are my portion and my cup of blessing; you hold my future. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. Psalm 16:5-6 (CSB)

I always let the Lord guide me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Psalm 16:8 (CSB)

HOW DO I AWAKE DAILY IN HIS PRESENCE?

1. INVITE IT DAILY.

Take a moment at the beginning of each day and ask the Holy Spirit to fill you.

2. SEEK HIM THROUGH HIS WORD.

Open up His word every day – even if it’s just one verse. Read it, say it, meditate on it.

3. WORSHIP TO DRAW NEARER.

‘Soak’ in it and allow it to minister to you.

4. PRAY AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY.

Keep a constant conversation with God throughout your day.

5. TURN DOWN THE VOLUME ON OUTSIDE NOISE.

Turn off social media, the news, and your phone for at least part of each day.

My prayer is that doing these simple things will help you discover a place in His presence that brings a satisfaction that only He can bring. A contentment and peace that cannot be stolen away by the unexpected and unwanted circumstances in our lives.
